The 6×5 grid explained

Sweet Bonanza's playfield is a 6-reel-wide, 5-row-tall grid. That's 30 symbol positions per spin. Each reel is an independent column; symbols drop in from above when the spin starts.

Unlike a classic 3×5 slot, the 6×5 grid has roughly double the symbol coverage per spin, which is why the pays-anywhere mechanic works mathematically — it needs enough surface area to make 8-symbol clusters statistically reasonable.

Pays-anywhere mechanic

The defining feature of Sweet Bonanza. Here's how it works:

  1. After a spin, the grid is evaluated.
  2. If eight or more of any single symbol appear anywhere on the grid — not in adjacent positions, not on a payline, anywhere — that's a paying combination.
  3. The payout depends on the symbol value and the cluster size (8-9 = base pay, 10-11 = mid pay, 12+ = top pay).
  4. Winning symbols dissolve into sparkles.
  5. New symbols tumble in to fill the gaps.
  6. The grid is re-evaluated. Repeat until no new wins.

This is technically called "scatter pays" in industry terminology — the symbols don't need to touch each other or follow a payline. Some sites call it "cluster pays" but that's slightly inaccurate; cluster-pays usually requires symbols to be adjacent. Sweet Bonanza only requires the count.

The symbol roster

Sweet Bonanza has 10 paying symbols plus a scatter:

High-paying symbols (top 4)

SymbolTop pay (12+ on grid, multiplier of stake)
Red heart candy75×
Purple grape40×
Green watermelon25×
Blue plum18×

Low-paying symbols (jellybeans, 5 candy colours)

SymbolTop pay (12+ on grid)
Red jellybean12×
Purple jellybean10×
Green jellybean
Yellow jellybean
Blue jellybean

Scatter

SymbolFunction
LollipopTriggers free spins (4+ anywhere)

Note that there's no wild symbol in Sweet Bonanza — unlike many pays-anywhere slots, the only special symbol is the lollipop scatter. This keeps the math clean and makes the multiplier bombs (which arrive in the bonus round) the only chaos vector.

Bet range and stake structure

The full bet range:

Bet levelSpin cost (AUD)
MinimumA$0.20
Low-roller comfortA$0.20 – A$0.40
Mid-stakeA$1.00 – A$2.00
High-stakeA$10.00 – A$50.00
MaxA$125.00

Bet adjustments are usually granular (0.20 → 0.30 → 0.40 → 0.50 → 0.80 → 1.00 → ...) rather than continuous. The casino's settings allow you to set a custom bet anywhere within the range, but most adjustments use the preset levels.

Volatility profile

Sweet Bonanza is rated High by Pragmatic Play — but importantly, not Very High. The distinction matters:

  • Very high (e.g. Gates of Olympus): bonus rounds are rare but huge.
  • High (Sweet Bonanza): bonus rounds happen more frequently but pay smaller relative to top hits.

Across our 300+ test spins:

MetricObservation
Average free-spins frequency~1 in every 110-130 spins (without Ante Bet)
Average free-spins frequency with Ante Bet~1 in every 55-65 spins
Median free-spins result35-45× stake
Top free-spins result observed850× stake

For comparison, Gates of Olympus (very-high) shows a bonus frequency of around 1 in 175 and a top observed result roughly 30% higher. Sweet Bonanza is the more accessible of the two. The full RTP and volatility breakdown digs into how this distribution shifts across variants.

RTP variants — verify in-game

RTPStatus
96.51%Default certified version (recommended)
95.49%Reduced variant (some operators)
94.50%Reduced variant (some operators)

How to verify: open the in-game info panel (usually labelled "i" or in the menu). The RTP is stated on the first or second page of game info. All four featured casinos run the 96.51% default version as of May 2026.

Mathematical edge breakdown

At default RTP (96.51%):

  • House edge: 3.49%
  • Expected return per A$100 wagered over infinite spins: A$96.51
  • Per-session variance: very high (any individual session can deviate substantially from RTP)

At reduced variants:

  • 95.49% RTP → 4.51% house edge
  • 94.50% RTP → 5.50% house edge (a 57% increase in house edge vs default)

This is why the variant warning matters. Across 1,000 spins at A$1.00 stake, the difference between 96.51% and 94.50% is roughly A$20 in expected loss.

Certification chain

EntityRole
Pragmatic PlayGame developer + RNG provider
GLI (Gaming Laboratories International)RNG certification + math model audit
BMM TestlabsIndependent secondary RNG audit
MGA (Malta Gaming Authority)Studio licensing authority
Curaçao eGamingCasino operator licensing (for the AU-friendly casinos featured here)

The certification chain means: Pragmatic Play built the math, two independent labs audited it, and the operator running the game holds a gaming licence in a jurisdiction with enforceable compliance. None of those four entities can unilaterally modify the RTP — variant selection happens at the operator level and is declared in-game.

Quick FAQ

What's the minimum bet? A$0.20 per spin at every featured AU casino.

Can the symbol cluster size be 8 exactly, or does it need to be 9+? Eight is the minimum — exactly 8 of one symbol pays the base rate. 10-11 pays the mid rate. 12+ pays the top rate (which is what's listed in our symbol table).

Is there a wild symbol? No — Sweet Bonanza has no wild. Only the lollipop scatter is non-paying-by-cluster.

What's the difference between scatter and wild? A scatter triggers a feature (free spins here). A wild substitutes for other symbols to form winning clusters. Sweet Bonanza only has scatters.

Is volatility the same as RTP? No — RTP is the long-run expected return percentage; volatility is the spread of outcomes. Two slots can have identical RTP but very different volatility.

Does the game have a progressive jackpot? No — the 21,100× max win is a flat ceiling, not a progressive pool.

Can the math be modified? Not at the casino level. Operators choose from Pragmatic Play's pre-certified RTP variants. The math itself is locked once a variant is deployed.
